Eirtakon Smashes 1,000 Attendees Barrier

Eirtakon 2009 has hit through the magical number of 1,000 attendees, cementing its place as the largest anime event in the country and attracting fans from all over the world.

Eirtakon 09's esteemed guest of honour, Kevin M. Connolly, put on a unique fan dubbing panel on both the Saturday and Sunday of Eirtakon, where lucky fans got a chance to dub over sections of Kevin's favourite anime scenes.

The biggest gathering of cosplayers ever seen in Ireland brought an atmosphere of celebration to Dublin City University, with the venue literally bursting at the seems with some of the best costumes and characters ever to attend Eirtakon.

Eirtakon's two screening rooms were always packed and as in previous years, European exclusive screenings were shown throughout the weekend, along with classics and favourites like Cowboy Bebop. The AMV competition again drew some of the highest quality submissions, with last year's winner Ken Mahon again picking up the prize for best AMV at Eirtakon.

In the main hall of Eirtakon, our traders area saw the biggest turnout yet - whether it was anime DVDs from United Publications, plushies from Cartoon Passion or the latest console games from Ireland's online games retailer gamesnash.ie, everything was covered this weekend only in Dublin and only at Eirtakon!

The best up-and-coming mangaka in Ireland again made an appearance at Eirtakon's Artist Alley, which proved to be an even bigger hit than last year. Attendees could buy handcrafted keyrings, one-off posters, bookmarks and even specially commissioned portraits!

The gaming section at Eirtakon has grown yet again this year to be one of the event's biggest attractions, whether you wanted to take part in a Street Fighter IV tournament or take on a game of Rock Band, Eirtakon was catering for everyone this year.

And of course that's not where it ends! Our panels this year included a unique manga workshop by published artist Anna Fitzpatrick, who recently released her latest book Between Worlds. Anna packed out our panels room and kept attendees glued to her screen as she demonstrated some of the tricks of the trade!

Over the next few days, expect the Eirtakon website to be filled up with with pictures, videos and reports from the convention!

We would also like so say a very special thank you to everyone who entered all the competitions and a big congratulations to the well deserved winners! And also of course to our fantastic staff, committee and guest of honour, without whom the weekend would have never happened. A bit thank you to you all and we'll be back again next year!
